3 Tips to Easily Boost Your Internet Speed

Nice video. But REALLY important to make sure you switch off ALL devices that could be using your internet connection and shutdown any applications that could be consuming the internet when you do the test. EG If you have a cloud backup that happens to be doing a backup of your computer when you do the test the results will be distorted this will be especially important for people on lower speed connections. Also the internet is a web, by running a test your only testing between your computer and the host that you are running the test from. So when I ran the same test on my 80mb connection it was a lot slower... but thats because I'm in London :) so further away from the testing tool website.

Some companies cheat too eg if Comcast's test server is located on the same network as you (ie your a comcast customer) it will show a high speed but your only testing between you and the server and comcast's connections to the rest of the internet could be a lot slower. So the only real way to get a rough idea is to test multiple locations across the country/world and then averaging the speed.

BUT if you are just interested in periscope then your only interested in the speed between you and the periscope servers. But also your not as much interested in the amount of data rather than the latency and consistency of that connection.

After doing a bit of testing from my own connection using www.periscope.tv (which seems like the periscope website so hoping all the streamed videos are heading there but maybe not without additional checking).

I took a look and the route that my computer data takes to get to Periscope.

I'm using a tool called VisualRoute to see the route it takes:

You can see that I get routed to a server in Atlanta which takes "12 tops" which is 12 different routers on the internet which could be different ISPs.

BUT if I try my mobile connection in London:

I get routed via Amsterdam and to a periscope server in San Fran with 12 hops again but the route maybe quicker or the atlanta servers may not be currently as quick as the San fran ones.

SOOOOooo my guess is Periscope have servers in San Fran and Atlanta (probably others). Generally the closer you are to those servers the better performance you are going to have. This may explain why my periscoping in London is so dodgy :)

BUT this is a little hypothetical because www.periscope.tv may not be where the app connects to, to send its stream but interesting anyway :)

Anyway keep up with the vids!!!

Hi James,
Thanks for leaving such a detailed and thoughtful comment, and thanks for this EXCELLENT tip. This is very helpful, and I think if we all do what ever we can to make sure our connection is as good as possible, we'll be on our way to having the best possible streaming, viewing, and scoping experiences possible. Thank you again, I really appreciate you!
Cheers,
Missy
